Science Reading Comprehension Digestive System

Science reading comprehension can be engaging! This reading comprehension for science discusses the topic of how digestion system works. Along with the reading passage are science reading comprehension worksheets, containing questions that align with the reading passage. There is also an application question to get the students showcasing their understanding. I have made this activity for my foundation tier year 10 students studying AQA GCSE Combined Science. As such, the content aligns with that specification. However, I do believe it would also be suitable for a high attaining KS3 group in year 8 or 9. My passion for science literacy is what has lead me to develop a range of science reading comprehension worksheet, as it is important for students to be able to access nonfiction reading comprehension outside of their English lessons. This lesson plan is designed to get students enjoying reading about science and applying what they have learned. The focus of the passage is the journey food takes through the digestive system, including answering such questions as: What is digestion system? How digestion system works? Where does the digestive system begin? Where does the digestive process start? What is the digestive system importance? What are foods good for digestion system? Which part of the digestive system absorbs water? Included in this resource is: Digestion System reading passage (3 pages) Student worksheet (2 pages) Exit Ticket Lesson plan (1 page) Teacher reflection (1 page) Ideas for using this resource: Team work: they read together and work together on the questions As a part of a literacy centre Individual task: for early finishers/as homework Class task: taking it in turns to read together, before completing the worksheets in pairs/individually I hope you enjoy this activity - keep an eye out for more Biology reading comprehension passages with activities coming soon!

Digestive System & Principles of Organisation

Complete No-Prep lesson with exam style questions, tasks and answers on the Digestive System and Principles of Organisation for AQA GCSE (9-1) Science / Biology. This lesson covers all of AQA GCSE Combined Science / Biology 4.2.1 “principles of organisation” and parts of 4.2.2.1 “the human digestive system”. In this lesson students learn about cells, tissues, organs and organ systems (4.2.1), and then about the digestive system and its function (which covers parts of 4.2.2.1). Note: The remaining parts of 4.2.2.1, which explain enzymes in detail, are in the next lesson in this topic. As a Secondary Science teacher, Deputy Headteacher, writer and examiner for many years I make high quality no-prep lessons so busy teachers can teach outstanding lessons without spending hours planning. This high quality lesson includes explanations, different types of in-lesson assessment (all with answers) and unique exam-style questions. My lessons are designed to take learners on a journey that builds up their understanding step by step, while still going into a lot of depth. The preview video shows a representative sample of slides from the resource so that you get a good idea of what it includes before you buy. What’s Included: • Teaching notes • Starter / Do Now Activity • Explanation slides in “chunked” sections with animated diagrams. • Multiple questions in different question styles and difficulties - no need for worksheets. Each “chunked” explanation section typically includes a set of “learning check / quick questions” followed by a set of in-depth questions on the learning from that “chunk” of the lesson. All questions have answers. • Exam-style questions on the whole lesson at the end of the lesson- these are unique, based on real exam questions but not just copied from exam boards. • Answers for all questions • All easily editable to adapt to your teaching or to use in existing lessons. • Slightly humorous, at points, if you like that sort of thing. The lesson was written for AQA GCSE Science / Biology but is very likely to be applicable to other exam specifications. Please leave a rating / review and all other feedback gratefully received!

Digestive System

This focuses heavily on literacy while learning about the digestive system. You will need access to a lot of Biology textbooks from KS3 to A Level and potentially access to the internet. The starter is a Scrabble based activity where students are challenged to find the words that have the highest score. This can be differentiated by giving students the choice of an unlimited number of letters, no more than 7 letters etc. The main part of the lesson is a research based task in groups. This takes the form of a “FIGHT!” as students will have to decide which is the most important in the body. Groups are allocated an organ to research using the questions on the powerpoint. The groups then nominate a spokesperson to feedback the information from the group. Students then have to vote which organ they think is the most important. There are then questions to answer as the plenary of the lesson. Hope you find this useful!
