A 90 mins - 2 hours fully-resourced PSHCE lesson all about the importance of critical thinking and being able to spot and debunk fake news. Fake News Assembly

(5)
An assembly focusing on the dangers of fake news, how we recognise fake news and the importance of being aware of it. The assembly explores the fact that it was Hitler who invented the idea of fake news and then examines how he used it to gain power and control the public, before comparing it to the way politicians use fake news - from Thatcher to Trump. There are then slides which explore how to recognise fake news and what to do if you’re unsure. The slides shown are just a sample of those included. The whole assembly follows an easy narrative that can be used with no additional prep (although it is also editable should you want to). Best suited for secondary students. Fake News Assembly - 2023

(3)
This assembly looks at the problem of Fake News in today’s society and the role it has played in several major world events since 2016, up to the present day (including Brexit, Trump, Wikileaks, Climate change denial etc.) The assembly covers what fake news is, the history of fake news, where it comes from, how it spreads and why it matters. It also features a quiz where the students will get the chance to see if they can spot the fake news stories out of ten unlikely sounding stories. Finally the assembly links fake news to gossip and rumours and gives tips as to how to spot fake news (both online and in the classroom). This is a fun but comprehensive assembly.

Fake News Activities KS2

These are great educational resources aimed at upper KS2 learners. Fake news is an area of literacy that is now becoming more and more an issue. Stories are being shared on social media and people are unsure of what is true and what is fake. Here you will find a poster giving strategies to help children to remember to think before trusting what they are reading. There is also a checklist which they can use to help them to decide if a story is from a trusted source. Finally there is a really good game which children will really enjoy, reading headlines as they move along the game board deciding which are real and which are fake. A brilliant set of resources to build important skills in a fun way, whilst putting the love in learning…

Fake News

ake news spreads quicker than real news...why? As a social studies teacher I have taken this as a personal challenge to empower students with the skills to figure out the difference between real and lies. Kick off the lesson by having students collect 5 of their own news titles. Then out of no where bring the fun with a simulation. Pick a handful of coconspirators and equip them with student role cards to act as people during the time period you are studying. (A nice review tool too!) The class will use the included sentence stems to create questions for the actors. Then the class will vote- who was the most trustworthy? When students are all excited from the simulation have them take that inquisitive power and apply it to the news articles they found at the beginning of the class. Students will use their Historical Thinking Matters Stems (included), to help them determine if their stories are real or fake. Students will also have have their own Fake News Checklist to help walk them through the process. If you enjoy my lesson please follow my store, to receive updates when I post new products. And if you would be so kind, please leave me a comment. Please check me out at: Thank you, Ms. Furnas
