I made this to teach KS1 children about shadows. The Peter Pan picture is a good discussion point (can your shadow move on its own? Can you touch your shadow etc.). The shared read also explores these ideas of a shadow, helping to draw out and challenge misconceptions. There is then a hyperlink to a fantastic Interactive resource which the children can use to explore shadows in terms of length and direction in the day and night, indoors and outdoors. The end of the PowerPoint features a Weakest Link style quiz which I usually use as a plenary.

There will be no time to lurk in the shadows in this session as groups create fair tests to answer questions before carrying them out and recording the results. Groups then draw conclusions and report their findings to the class. Suitable for Y6 pupils.

This is a single ppt introducing shadows and encouraging initial thoughts and interpretations from the students. Light is electromagnetic radiation which is visible to the human eye. In this lesson, students will learn about how shadows are made and will investigate whether the distance or angle of a light source effects the size of the shadow made by an object. They will be supported in this experiment and will create a line graph to show their results. Finally they will create their own shadow puppet performance. This lesson is intended for Year 6 students but can easily be modified to suit lower KS2 and KS3. This lesson is 1/6 lessons on Light. Pupils will have the opportunity to match pictures with their shadows. There are six pages that incorporate different themes including animals, zoo animals, fruit, vegetables and transport.

This is an entire lesson with notes and a powerpoint presentation on Light and Shadows. The lesson starter and the videos needed for the presentation are included. There is a short MCQ given at the end of the presentation. This is suitable for ages 11-14 and even a little older to help with the revision on light. It also explains the concepts of eclipses and why we see them.

Stage 2 Science Worksheet to support placement of shadows

This activity is designed to encourage children to explore how shadows are created. Children will discover that different light sources and different materials can create different kinds of shadows. Older children will also discover that the sun can create shadows of different width and length at different times of the day. This activity is designed to help connect children to the wonders of the natural world through sensory and play-based learning.
