I made this to teach KS1 children about shadows. The Peter Pan picture is a good discussion point (can your shadow move on its own? Can you touch your shadow etc.). The shared read also explores these ideas of a shadow, helping to draw out and challenge misconceptions. There is then a hyperlink to a fantastic Interactive resource which the children can use to explore shadows in terms of length and direction in the day and night, indoors and outdoors. The end of the PowerPoint features a Weakest Link style quiz which I usually use as a plenary.

This is a single ppt introducing shadows and encouraging initial thoughts and interpretations from the students. It could be extended to cover 2 one hour lessons simply by encouraging longer discussion and sharing of ideas It also provides an overview of the unit and a long term homework task. This would also be usable for your online learners. I do not have permission to share the videos from the AQA website but you will need two of them for this lesson: the whole work video and the interview with Christopher Bruce

Light is electromagnetic radiation which is visible to the human eye. In this lesson, students will learn about how shadows are made and will investigate whether the distance or angle of a light source effects the size of the shadow made by an object. They will be supported in this experiment and will create a line graph to show their results. Finally they will create their own shadow puppet performance. This lesson is intended for Year 6 students but can easily be modified to suit lower KS2 and KS3. This lesson is 1/6 lessons on Light.
