World Cup Maths Puzzles!

These short and snappy puzzles are perfect for engaging all of the World Cup lovers in your class with a wide range of maths problems! Using real-life statistics from FIFA World Cups past and present, students approach a number of varied maths topics, whilst also gaining valuable information about their favourite teams and players. I have used these resources with a number of KS2 and KS3 classes, and have found that they work great for morning mental maths challenges or lesson starters/ fillers. Some of the maths topics covered include: statistics, percentages, charts and graphs, data handling, averages, ratios, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, estimation and problem solving, critical thinking, and fractions. Some of the specific tasks involved include: working out the goals to games ratio of some of the best strikers, finding out which teams have the best goal difference, creating data to present performance, and comparing player statistics over different tournaments. There are 30 tasks in total, in which each the major World Cup nations are focused upon in at least one activity each. The tasks are also separated by difficulty into ‘Beginner’,‘Intermediate’, and ‘Difficult’ tasks (refer to the B, I, or D symbols in the top left of each activity). FIFA WORLD CUP 2018 is HERE! Coming from a ‘football crazy’ class, I knew my class would want to spend the end of year engaging with content based around the FIFA world cup. This resource involves the whole class and is a way to consolidate maths through the World Cup. I have included: PPT for the names of 30 children PPT for the names/groups of the countries in the World Cup Scoreboard to track who is winning/competing against who. Research sheet to engage children with the country they chose Over 45 different maths questions WITH answers Game rules Example of a layout of who plays who Children names will be drawn from a hat along with a country. They will then be representing this country in the game. Children will roll a dice 6 times. If either competing team rolls a 6, this equates to one goal IF they can answer the a maths question (included) correctly. If they get it incorrect, the goal has been saved by their opponent. Aimed at KS2. Can be eaily adapted for your children too. In my class, there are only 18 students, but I have included enough for 30. (As there is 2 extra teams, the first two children ‘out’ can come back in. An exhilarating, fun activity for those ‘End of Year’ days that we all crave activities for. We really enjoyed it :)

There has been a murder at the world cup! A problem solving murder mystery where children need to use different maths strategies to solve clues to eliminate suspects from a list until only one is left - the murderer. Children will have to solve worded maths problems, multiply, divide and decode to solve the mystery. Great activity for this time of year, children find it enjoyable. Works well in mixed ability pairs.

Whether or not you are a soccer fan, I'm sure that your students are! So now is the time to be the hero in your classroom when you hand out soccer-themed worksheets . If you are a 2nd-6th grade math teacher, you are sure to find the right fit of math worksheets for your class. Worksheet topics include: Fractions: from beginning to difficult. There are pages on very basic color fraction problems, and there are pages on simplifying fractions and adding different 2-digit denominators. Decimals: There are pages of adding decimals, fill-in the missing decimals, and read and write the decimal. Percents: This is my favorite section because it includes a Percent Circle Guide (instructions on how to use the percent circle). No teacher should be without one when teaching the most simple way to calculate percent word problems. Also, the word problems have a soccer theme. Kids will love it! COMPREHENSION This is a comprehension I made for my year 4 class. There are three different sets: one that can be used like a booklet, where the text and questions are on the same page with mostly retrieval questions one where the text is separate to the questions and questions are a mix of retrieval and more higher order including vocabulary one where the text is separate to the questions and questions are varied from giving evidence from the text to vocabulary questions etc. I think it can be used with high year 2 as well as KS2. The actual information text is attached as reading sheet. Both in word and PDF MATHS This resource consists of the following five mostly differentiated activities related to the World Cup: Problem-solving lesson with notebook and 3 differentiated sheets. Children design new football kit for their favourite national team consisting of tshirts, shorts (and socks) and find all possibilities of combining them when using 2 (3) colours. Bar chart lesson. Children use data from a Workd Cup table and put it into a bar chart. Differentiated. First bar chart in ones up to 6 and children enter amount of world cups won by different nations. Second bar chart in twos up to 6 and children enter amount of world cups won by different nations. Third bar chart in tens up to 230 where children enter amount of goals scored in world cups for several nations. All bar charts have at least 5 follow-up questions. First two probably more suited to KS1, last one to KS2. Symmetry activity. Children use pictures of flags of all participating teams which are included and sort them into symmetrical and not symmetrical. Included is another sheet on explaining our reasoning - choose two non-symmetrical flags - what would need to be changed so they are symmetrical, explain. Sorting Activity: Children use pictures of flags of all participating teams which are included and sort them using their own criteria into a Venn or Carroll diagram. A quick activity on comparing two flags - how are they the same and how are they different. One activity where children use information on who won the world cup when and put the countries in chronological order by year. One scaffolded sheet and one not scaffolded. All activities attached as word and pdf files in case the word files don’t open properly. I SELL BOTH SEPARATELY AS WELL IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAVE MONEY.
