Something simple that works for me is to have late student/s, without a pass, write their name on the board as they enter the room. They then owe me lunch detention, where they show up to my room and serve anywhere from 5-10 minutes. Of course there has to be an additional consequence for not showing up which can create a little more work. After the first couple of weeks of school, students generally show up on time.

Good thinking and good advice, I do think I'd email the note issue rather than send them back, though the other teacher does need to sort it out. It's also worth a slight challenge / comment depending on the pupil, you're late but at least you're here, I'll need to talk to you in a minute once you've got sorted, rather than risk a public confrontation, but as you point out the public sense of justice and fairness is also important.

Some very poor advice contained in here. 1. Do not deal with lateness immediately! Do not allow late students to disctract from a lesson. Take a mental note (or written note if you have a por memory) and deal with it at an appropriate time. Mark the child as late in the register and if this is a common issue with the child, make sure the Form Tutor is aware and deals with it. 2. Do not send a child out of class to pester other teachers for notes. Children should not be sent out of lessons for anything but emergencies - if you follow Tom's advice the child may go missing on this wild errand for the whole lesson. Do check yourself with the relevant teacher - instant message using the school's MIS system being the most obvious. I do hope TES aren't paying Tom.

A good reminder, as we have all encountered 'the saunterer' although i always used to just send them straight out and remind to knock before entering. I didn't give room for arguing as i only said once, you are on my time and i will deal with you later. It was tried several times and SMT backed up as well( happened to other teachers) so a timely reminder that it was not personal is always valuable as well.
