Tug-of-war examines friction and sliding objects for KS2 science.
On a shiny wooden floor a tug of war contest is taking place. The prize is a plate of cream cakes. On one team is a large guy; on the other team, two smaller guys. The large guy is only wearing his socks, his opponents are wearing trainers. The bell goes and the tug-of-war begins. The tension mounts as the big guy is pretty strong and seems to be able to pull the weedier guys towards him with ease. But his socks are slipping on the shiny wooden floor. We introduce some jeopardy as they pull each other back and forth. Now we pose the prompt question: Who is going to win the cream cakes?and why? The answer is revealed. The big guy is suddenly pulled forward as his socks fail to grip the slippery floor. The weedy guys win the cakes!
