This seven week (42 lesson) scheme of work is designed for Component 4 of the Edexcel A Level English Literature course. The scheme is based on the assumption that over the course of year one (AS), students have read six dystopian novels: The Handmaid’s Tale, Brave New World, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, The Road, and Oryx and Crake. At the end of year one, students then select two of these novels to study for their coursework. The scheme directs students to complete an in-depth investigation of genre, language, and structure of their two novels. Students must also undertake an investigation of relevant historical, social, cultural and political contexts which influence and are significant in the reading of their novels. Students will also research and engage with a range of literary criticisms and alternative interpretations of their novels. Teachers will facilitate student investigation, but for the most part, students will be fairly independent. At the beginning of the scheme, teacher’s will assist students to select their novels, prompt them to investigate elements of narrative and help them to develop their question – students will largely work as individuals to explore their chosen novels.

The scheme is accompanied by PowerPoint presentations and other relevant resources.
