From my experience, Alevel students struggle to make the leap from GCSE style writing to what is required from Alevel, particularly for introductions. In order to combat this issue, I have compiled a collection of introductions that I used with my Alevel English Literature group. This allowed them to examine a successful writing style, whilst reflecting on their own work. It proved very successful in the lesson when used, and the consequentially has shown a drastic improvement to the pupils writing. I used this resource by initially taking away the essay title, and allowing them to decipher what the title would be based on the introduction alone. This forced them to evaluate the purpose of an introduction and therefore develop their own writing style accordingly. This resource, however, can be used as is and evaluation of the work can still produce successful outcomes. The essays used have been chosen to support those doing the Edexcel English Literature Alevel, but can be applied to any examination board.
