At least 2 lessons on abortion, covering the following learning objectives:

  • To understand what is meant by the terms abortion, pro-life and pro-choice
  • To know the law surrounding abortion in the UK
  • To discuss and analyse some of the issues surrounding abortion, including arguments on when life begins, the life of the mother, quality of life and sanctity of life
  • To know different arguments and beliefs about abortion

Lesson 1 starts with analysing/discussing a 2018 newspaper headline about abortion, which is then explored in more depth on the PPT. Students then put together a timeline on the development of the foetus to help them consider ‘why does life begin?’, look at the UK law and choose a class debate.

Lesson 2 starts with completing an ‘issues of abortion’ scenario sheet. Students then look at pro-choice and pro-life arguments with a card sort activity and then look at/choose an abortion protest slogan to respond to.
