This is a lesson analysing the use of colour in Volver.
There is an accompanying lesson plan to give more details on the activities involved in the lesson.
The lesson starts with an activity where the students discuss the meaning of different colours to them - this is to establish the idea that different colours have different meanings/interpretations to different people and it is important that they are able to justify the meanings that they interpret.
They then work in pairs to analyse the colours used in different scenes (Slides at the end of the PowerPoint have a range of scenes from the film).
I printed the scenes and the students wrote their ideas on post it notes and stuck them on the scene. They looked at the possible meanings and impacts of the colours used. They then swapped their scene with another pair to see if they could add any additional ideas.
We then looked at how to structure a paragraph - Point, Evidence, Explain.
I gave them an example paragraph from an essay on a different topic related to Volver which I had cut up into the three sections (PEE). They had to rearrange and stick it down in the correct order.
They then focused on writing their own paragraph about the use of colour in Volver which they went on to peer assess so that they could get meaningful feedback before having to write the essay as a whole.
