From the gory details of mummification to the technicalities of controlling the flooding of ‘The Nile’, there is a wealth of fascinating information contained in these songs. ‘Gods and Goddesses’ and ‘Hieroglyphics’ are featured and Tutankhamun gets more than a passing mention in two songs, one more light-hearted than the other! ‘Pyramids’, ‘The Sphinx’ and ‘Toys and Games’ round up this whistle-stop tour of Ancient Egypt!

“Hootin’, Rootin’ Tutankhamun" is available for download free from my TES shop.

This set of songs on ‘Ancient Egypt’ consists of:

* 20 mp3 files, with both vocal and piano backing tracks
* a PDF of the music and lyrics
* an illustrated PowerPoint of each song for use with digital projectors and whiteboards. The audio tracks, vocal and instrumental, are embedded in the PowerPoint - you just have to click on the relevant icon to select vocal or piano only. A separate PowerPoint is included with stave notation.
* a separate Word document containing the lyrics.

Full Song list:

  1. “The Nile”
Some Geography here, with details of the famous river. It contains Herodotus’s statement, “Egypt is the gift of the Nile” and there are references to nileometers, the fertility the river brought and also to the Aswan Dam.
  2. “Mummies”
The gory details of mummification! (Not too gory!!)
  3. “Mighty Pyramid”
This song provides a description of the purpose of the pyramids, the resting place of the Pharaohs.
  4. “Hootin’, Rootin’ Tutankhamun”
This is a lively song about the boy Pharaoh in the form of a Hoe Down! (This song may be downloaded from my shop free of charge).
  5. “Hieroglyphics”
This song provides interesting information in a fun way about the famous Egyptian writing. It mentions Champollion and the Rosetta Stone.
  6. “The Curse of Tutankhamun”
This song has an appropriately spooky tune and begins with the words: “What could be worse than an ancient curse?..”.
  7. “Building a Pyramid”
We now know that the pyramids were built, not by slaves, but chiefly by paid workers who lived in nearby dwellings and that is the perspective this song adopts.
  8. “The Sphinx”
A song about this most mysterious of ancient monuments.
  9. “Toys and Games”
A song about some of the most popular games in ancient Egypt, such as senet, snake and the wonderfully named “Khuzza Lawizza” aka leap frog!
  10. “Gods and goddesses”
No set of songs about Ancient Egypt would be complete without reference to the Egyptian gods of long ago! The song refers to Thoth, Khepri and Sekhmet among others.

No licence is required for performing any of my material, and the music and lyrics may be copied freely for use within or by your school.
