Black History Unit: Exploring Capoeira
This unit is cross-curricular and involves drama & dance, social studies, Music Physical Education and language learning targets. Students explore the history of the contemporay dances as a lead in to an exploration of Capoeira as dance, as music, and as a martial art. I have instructed in my classroom looking at Capoeira as representation of "Rebellion against Oppression," and this is the framework that I use for Anti-Oppression critical understandings during Black History Month. This unit is interactive and has many facets that my students have enjoyed immensely. It can be modified of course to connect with your critical understandings that you are sharing in your class. Enjoy!
