We were desperate for some material to help teach this course as edexcel still haven't published a textbook. I would argue this resource is more 'revision notes' than a textbook of sorts. What would have been useful would have been a section on examination technique/examination questions.

It is said that those who do not learn from the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them. The history of war in this period birthed the development of so many new tactics as the technology changed the face of warfare: from the floundering experiments with early tanks and submarines to the magnificent airships that floated in, and then quickly out, of the modern world. From the Great War to the Falklands. From The Spanish War to China. This book draws together the common themes of such a vast and pivotal part of military history, looking in detail at everything from the experience of troops on the ground to the aims and mistakes of the leaders at the time. A selection of essay-enhancing quotes from powerful figures of history reflects on and elucidates the views of the divergent ideologies. Buried within the political landscape of Europe and beyond in the early 20th Century, there lies a story of humanitarian loss - the broken eggs that made the omelet of the advancement of warfare. This concise guide is excellent for topic revision, is peppered with facts and figures to bring coursework up a grade and to inspire a passion for history in the hearts and minds of a generation now removed from the living reality of early 20th century warfare. Visual icons in the text reinforce and link together concepts in a way that promotes deeper thought and analysis, providing the student with an encyclopaedia of knowledge that they can mentally reference and organise, to apply to answering essay questions with ease and confident clarity. The author’s extensive love and interest for this period of history shine through the text; an inspirational approach to what can otherwise often be a biased presentation of a complex topic. The combination of student and teacher resources, along with additional multimedia extras, makes for a seamless module of material that works in a perfectly complimentary way, while still allowing for professional selection and tailoring of material to meet the individual needs of student learning styles. This is the definitive work; an absolute must-buy bundle, for any teacher or student undertaking this particular course.
