Character Investigation Mat

The Character Investigation Mat is a structured planning and drafting tool designed to help pupils create deeper, more convincing characters.

Pupils are guided to:

• Identify a clear core trait
• Develop a trait spectrum and justify the best fit
• Consider how the trait shapes the reader’s opinion
• Explore emotional insight through thoughts and feelings
• Show the trait through actions using precise vocabulary
• Plan character motivation and growth (Upper KS2)
• Write a refined character description

This resource encourages deliberate word choice, reader awareness and “show, don’t tell” writing. Ideal for Years 3–6 narrative lessons, guided writing or independent character development tasks.
