Color Art Drawing - Georgia O’Keefe - Sub Lesson - Early Finishers

This activity is a fantastic introduction for students to working with color, for understanding color theory, and in emulating Georgia O’Keefe’s technique. Students are provided with a reference image of her famous painting, Red Poppy, and a swatch of the various colors included in it. A template enables students to emulate O’Keefe’s technique within guiding outlines.

Students may use pencils or watercolor to create the image. By building the picture in this way, they gain an understanding of their medium, of tone and how colors work together to create visual effects; and of observational drawing/painting, while also building their familiarity with this historically-significant artwork. It is also an engaging handout for early-finishers or for those who respond well to activities that are accessible but require focus.
