**Constructivism and its artists, shortly described and explained in text-quotes + art-images ** - free resource for students, pupils and teachers in Russian art history

.
The russian art movement Constructivism is described and explained here in short text-quotes of Dutch art-critic Jacob Bendien. He was a contemporary of the Russian art-movement and explains the meaning, goals and characteristics of it. Included are constructivist art-images in a second seperate PDF.

Constructivism started from c. 1918 in Russia, in the revolutionary years of the early communist Soviet Union. Its artists were strongly inspired by modern technology and architecture. They rejected the idea of autonomous art, in favour of art as a practice for social purposes. Famous Constructivist artists were El Lissitzky, Naum Gabo, Tatlin, the brothers Pevsner and Moholy-Nagy.

Some selected text-quotes on Constructivism in Russia, by Jacob Bendien - as a short introduction of his extended quotes, in PDF:

  • ’The Constructivists’ reality is that of the (natural) sciences built up from experience… .We practically have it in our power, like the machinist has power over his machine.'

  • ’Here was no longer any place for picturesque enchantment or a deepening of individual emotions; the middle-class atmosphere of life was finished. There was only place for constructions that could be objectively determined and valued… …nothing but clarity and survivability.'

  • ’The Constructivists do not limit themselves exclusively to painting materials such as paint and chalk etc., but use all possible materials if they are suitable for accurate use, such as metal, glass, concrete etc.'
