With a focus on sharks, skates and rays and their role within the environment, this Toolkit is packed with educational resources, games, activities and puzzles. Primarily created for teachers and marine educators working with key stage 1 and 2, it can be used in its entirety or dipped into for individual components. The resources use an ecosystem-wide approach to improve understanding and fascination of marine habitats along with the species found within. Its aim is to increase young people’s awareness of coastal and marine environments and the most serious threats they face.
Create your own shark/skate or ray habitat. Before you carry out this activity get your
children thinking about the specific habitat characteristics that a shark/skate/ray would
need to survive in the ocean.
Pet cards and skin texture boards. Children to sort the cards onto the correct board, depending on which skin type they have. Can provoke discussion around why animals have certain skins (temperature regulation, protection, sensory needs). Could also introduce camouflage.
