Directions: The Main idea is a statement that sums up the most important passage. Identifying the main idea will increase your understanding as you read. The passage includes details and examples that support and explain the main idea

1. To find the main idea of a passage, first identify the topic. Then as you read, define the central idea about the topic that the many details explain or support. The title of the source line can sometimes help identify the topic

2. Looking at the beginning and ending sentences of each paragraph can also help you identify the topic and main idea

3. Read the entire passage as you read, ask yourself “What is the most important point the author wants to convey about the topic?” The answer will help you identify the main idea

4. Look at the details included in the passage. Ask yourself what main idea they point to or explain

5. Scan the questions to focus your re-reading of the passage
