This Dig for Victory Design and Technology unit is perfect to use alongside a World War II topic.

Children will learn a range of cooking skills, including cutting, mixing and measuring, creating a range of simple meals, including salad, cake bread and sausage rolls.

These five lessons are fully resourced and planned, with detailed lesson plans provided. Many of these lessons could be extended to last more than one lesson.

Created by an experienced art and design & technology subject lead, these lessons have been used in a real classroom with real students across KS2.

There are PowerPoints for each lesson, worksheets, recipes and detailed lesson plans included in this bundle.

  1. Investigate the importance of fruits and vegetables in the diet.
    Review cooking skills, especially knife skills
    Follow a recipe to make pasta sauce

  2. To investigate suitable ingredients for a healthy salad.
    To prepare a healthy salad using cutting skills.
    To work safely and hygienically in the kitchen.
    To evaluate the food prepared.

  3. Investigate food and shopping in wartime Britain
    Explain how egg substitute was used in wartime food
    Review bread making skills and cook banana bread using egg substitute

  4. Make a wartime recipe using typical foods used at this time.
    Make a PowerPoint or poster describing meals for a day in wartime Britain
    Compare and evaluate cooking and modern equivalents

  5. Plan the food for a wartime street party
    Evaluate recipes linking them to the balanced plate model.
    Make wartime sausage rolls following a recipe.
