HUMANS Lesson 1-3= This TRIPLE lesson is part of a tailored unit to help students understand the differences between writing for Component 1 and 2. I have designed the ‘Humans’ and ‘The Returned’ as follows:

-Respective Media Language lessons on ‘Humans’ and a separate one on ‘The Returned’.
-A combined lesson on Post-Modernism whereby ‘Humans’ and ‘The Returned’ are both considered at once.
-Respective Representation lessons on ‘Humans’ and a separate one on ‘The Returned’.
-An Audience and Industry combined lesson on ‘Humans’
-An Audience and Industry combined lesson on ‘The Returned’

The above format is base don feedback from my students as to how they found it easier to digest the content and focus on specific texts holistically. This lesson covers:

-Viewing and analysis of Episode 1.
-An overview of the series.
-Genre and sub-genre conventions, iconography and motifs.
A brief history of the Sci-Fi genre.
-Characters within Humans
-An assessment based on assessing student’s retained knowledge surrounding Narrative theorists.
-Themes within 'Human’s with Teacher visual examples e.g. Religious symbolism in ‘Humans’
-RESISTS
-Tropes and Stock Characters
-Intertextuality
-An audio/ visual exploration of Sci Fi
-An analysis of a 'Human’s poster against codes
-Comparison and analysis of the opening credits of ‘Westworld’ and ‘Human’s’
-A Mastery sheet on the following question:

  1. According to Claude Lévi-Strauss, texts convey their meanings through a system of binary oppositions. Evaluate this structuralist theory.
Refer to the set episodes of Humans and The Returned in your response. [30]

NOTE: All task sheets, differentiated resource and audio/visual stimuli are included within the lesson/ Power Point.Help slides are also included at the end of the Power Point as well as a Mastery sheet that can be set as additional H/W and/or revision. A copy ofMark Dixon’s ‘Media Theory for A Level’ is included as a H/W task. If you do not have access to this or the Media Magazine article needed for the H/W I would advise setting the Mastery sheet for H/W.

NOTE: I am following EDUQAS Teaching Model 1 in my teaching/ SOW and my school is only providing Media Studies at a AS/A2 Two- Year Course. If you liked this resource and found it useful, it would be greatly appreciated if you could feedback or rate my resource as I am constantly trying to adapt and refine my resources to improve the learning of my students. Many thanks.
