LESSON 49-52 IN SERIES= This quad lesson is part of a 12 lesson series on Component 1, Section A and B (‘The Sun’ only)
of the EDUQAS examination . This Quad lesson focuses on how Newspapers use Media language to engage a readership and create meaning. The Power Point includes/ focuses on:

-Examiner expectations
-A reusable resource that students in groups are given to work on. The task is made up of 4 different newspapers covers (a mixture of tabloid and broadsheets). Students are then given arrows with definitions of all parts of the newspaper e.g. Masthead, puff etc. Students must first match up the term with definition and then using bluetac (best results when resource is laminated) point to each section of the newspaper.
-Difference between Tabloids/ Red Tops and Broadsheets
-Consolidation Task: Create a brainstorm for Tabloids and Broadsheets. Set each out as above. What are their codes and conventions? (REVISION RESOURCE)
-Socio/cultural, economic, political and historical contexts of the Syrian Refugee crisis (Audio/ Visual clips to support) to aid in an understanding of ‘The Guardian’
-CASE STUDY: How ‘The Independent’ differed in it’s choice of image the day after the child refugee died as opposed to the rest of the British press (Warning Graphic imagery present).
-Definitions of Immigration, Illegal immigration and Refugees.
-THEORY RECALL- Stuart Hall’s three readings. The students are given a statement for each EDUQAS Form. They must move around the room indicating whether they are dominant, negotiated or oppositional.
-Pro’s and con’s of immigration/ refugees and discussion (including audio/visual stimulus)
-Consolidation task (with differentiated handout to aid all learners), as follows:

The large majority of the resources include resources sheets, links to articles, features, moving image clips and H/W tasks. Power Point Slides also feature guidance and advice throughout. This was by far the unit I approached with the most trepidation. My students feedback that the unit was easy to understand, gave plenty of opportunity for application and allowed learners to stretch themselves whilst also feels supported/scaffolded. If you were to buy these lessons separately it would cost £22.00. However, if you buy this Bundle you will save 27%. That’s the Mastery sheet and Lesson 49-52 for free! For Individual descriptions of each lesson, please consult My Shop/click on the individual resources. NOTE: I am following EDUQAS Teaching Model 1 in my teaching/ SOW and my school operates a three year GCSE. Moreover, some of the tasks in lesson and for H/W are dependent upon owning the EDUQAS GCSE Revision Guide. If you liked these resources and found it useful, it would be greatly appreciated if you could feedback or rate my resource as I am constantly trying to adapt and refine my resources to improve the learning of my students. Many thanks.
