Elements of Gothic - KS3 SOW
This challenging six week (35 lessons) scheme explores the elements of Gothic with a focus on language analysis and description. The scheme is designed for Year 9 students but would be adapted for other year groups. By the end of the scheme, students should be able to identify Gothic features, explain their effect, and produce their own Gothic texts. Students will undertake research on the originals and history of Gothic Literature. They will then study a variety of extracts and short stories to identify conventions of Gothic Literature. The scheme has two in-built assessments: the reading assessment will direct students to analyse and answer a question on an unseen text in a similar to fashion to a GCSE Literature exam. The writing assessment will prompt students to write their own Gothic short story using conventions of Gothic. The scheme is accompanied by a fully comprehensive (lesson-by-lesson) PowerPoint and other relevant resources.
