This lesson is based on an interesting animated TED Ed. video that explores the origins of the modern English language. Many ESL students have an interest in how English has developed its versatile and dynamic vocabulary. European students in particular are often intrigued by the similarities and ‘false friends’ that feature between English and their own language. This lesson focuses on this topic and is a great way to introduce the concept of suffixes, prefixes and root words to your students. Aside from valuable listening test practice, this lesson is particularly helpful for students to understand the transformations part of their English exam. The exercise tasks will also help them to develop their ability to understand words in context and improve their ability to make correct word choices when writing.
