Evaluation of 60 similes

Students are taught to identify and comment on literary devices. The problem is that, in practice, the quality of their comments of evaluation are so often limited to vague phrases like: “it’s a good simile because I can see it clearer in my mind.” There needs to be a clearer engagement with specific effects of the language. One way to enrich this process is to show alternatives. In this resource twenty situation are described in a very straightforward way and three different similes are offered. The idea is for the student to read all three and decide which one is most effective and then to comment in detail as to why. Seeing three alternatives relating to the same subject reveals the experimental nature of writing and helps the student to be more critical in evaluation.
