William Shakespeare is one of the most famous people in British history. His 37 plays and 154 sonnets have been translated into more than 100 languages, and he is widely credited with bringing hundreds of words into common use. We only know fragments of information about Shakespeare’s private life. The momentous historical events of his time, including the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the unification of the English and Scottish crowns, and the Gunpowder Plot against King James I, also influenced his work. In this latest Connections feature we’re exploring Shakespeare’s work through 5 key themes – Tudor England, Monarchy, Britain, London and His Legacy – using news stories from the wider world, plus activities, debate questions and further reading links.
