Within this resource, I have included a Topic Cover page (which includes targeted vocabulary and key facts) and a scheme of work which shows the progression of knowledge and learning intentions.

The main focuses:

  • experience different techniques to decorate fabric (including applique, embroidery, fabric pens/paints, pinking shears)
  • upcycle a vest top into a tote bag
  • create a design for a target audience
These lessons have been taught for a Year 5 class but could be adapted for YEar 4 or Year 6.

At the end of the unit, the children will complete an assessment task which looks to answer the question that the unit has been designed around - What are the most effective finishing techniques to use for fabric? This includes the children evaluating their own tote bags against the given criteria at the start of the unit.

It has been taught with a 2 unit in mind, but could be spread out over a half term.
