Finding the gradient of a curve

Finding the gradient of the tangent on a curve, starting with y=x² and x=2. By choosing a point on the curve students find the gradient of the chord between the points where x=2 and x=4, and then choose smaller chords using points closer to x=2. Extends to other points on y=x² and then other simple functions. Student will hopefully generalise for y=ax^n.
