Group Talk encourages the use of spontaneous French. Here the students use a discussion template, the discussion mat and the PowerPoint. I have designed this Group Talk to help the students discuss the teams playing in Euro 2016. In doing so they will use adjectives the future, perfect and conditional tenses and will hopefully be able to express their passion for the beautiful game!
The main discussion template includes the following questions:

1. Que penses-tu de cette équipe?
2. Comment trouves-tu leur tenue ?
3. Penses-tu que cette équipe gagnera le match contre (name of opposing team) ?
4. Penses-tu que cette équipe gagnera Euro 2016 ?
5. Tu es allé(e) (name of country) e.g. en France?

Question 2 model answer extract:

Je pense que…
Je trouve que…
+
la tenue est…
le maillot de foot est…
le short est…
+
très
assez
vraiment
extrêmement
+
moche(s)
démodé(e)(s)
cool
joli(e)(s)
chic

Students can also build in phrases from the discussion mat, including:
Tu es d’accord? = Do you agree?
Je suis d’accord = I agree
Je ne suis pas d’accord = I disagree
Je ne sais pas = I don’t know
Peut-être = Perhaps

Attend! = Wait!
C’est ridicule! = That’s ridiculous!
Tu es fou/folle?! = Are you crazy?!
Ce n’est pas juste = It’s not fair!
Tu plaisantes? = You must be joking/ are you joking?

Show a PowerPoint slide for the students to discuss. Each slide names the country in French, has a French map of the country, a picture of the team kit, the flag, the team (pictures and names of the players), pictures of some traditional food and the group that the team are in for Euro 2016 in French. Cross-curricular stuff!
Please note that I felt that an image with names AND pictures of players would be more interesting for the students than simply a list of names and sometimes the most up-to-date image I could find of the team is from a Euro 2016 qualifier. Please see the UEFA Euro 2016 website for full squad details which you may like students to access on their own devices: http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/

The countries on the slides are:
La Belgique
L’Allemagne
L’Angleterre
La France
La République de l’Irlande
Les Pays de Galles
L’Espagne
L’Irlande du Nord
La Pologne

I’ve tried to include home teams as well as some of the other bigger names such as Germany, France and Spain. You won’t want to use them all, so edit as necessary!
