GIVER Ceremony of 12 Activity
GIVER Ceremony of 12 Activity

NOVEL = The Giver by Lois Lowry
LEVEL = middle school (junior high), high school (secondary)

This resource can be purchased as part of THE GIVER Unit Teaching Package bundle.

In The Giver, Jonas and all other 12 year olds go through the Ceremony of Twelve, their society's ritual during which all young people are assigned the job / career they'll work at for their adult years.

This Giver activity simulates that ceremony, bringing to life the reality of having a job assigned to you and providing the opportunity for discussion around what would be good and bad about being assigned a job.

This Giver activity uses the list of Top 200 Jobs of 2013 from You can see the complete list and the criteria for the job rankings HERE!!!

Using the Top 25 jobs and the Bottom 25 jobs, students will receive 2 jobs, one from the top and one from the bottom, but they won't know which one is which until after they've written their thoughts about the job and its description.

Then we walk through the 52-slide PowerPoint that shows each job's ranking and salary. It's always interesting to see how the students' thoughts about a job changes when they see the rank and the salary. It's also eye-opening for them to see all the potential jobs out there.

> 50 printable job cards (black and white or color)
> 1-page writing response handout
> 54-slide PowerPoint with jobs, descriptions, rank, and salary

Your students will have a great time with this Giver activity!

NOTE: Every PowerPoint includes both the PowerPoint Show and the customizable .ppt file.

Enjoy The Giver!
