Irony in "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver
Often times we expect something to go a certain way and we are surprised, angry or upset when the opposite of what we expect does not happen. Then again there are times when our expectations are turned upside down and we realize something new about ourselves and the world we live in. In this short story we see how wrong we can be about our expectations and come to realize something true and beautiful about ourselves and the world we live in.
