Get stitching with this Bayeux Tapestry art unit! Perfect for those studying Medieval times or art through the ages, children will find out about the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 whilst practising their fabric artistry skills.

Children will plan, design and create a piece of art that represents a section of the Bayeux Tapestry from felt and stitching, learning the skills of stitching and applique and comparing this to the modern day artistry of embroidery.

Each PowerPoint is easy to follow and guides the teacher through from starter, main input to task and plenary.

Lesson 1
L.O To experiment with creating art work using fabric and stitch.

Lesson 2
L.O. To plan a design inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry.
L.O. Use applique to attach fabric together.

Success Criteria:

  • I can try using fabric and the technique of stitching.
  • I can thread a needle.
  • I can secure a thread.
  • I can try to create different effects with stitch (some neat, some messy).

Lesson 3
L.O To create a stitching plan.
L.O. To create a story through fabric.
Success Criteria:

  • I can draw a simple, bold design.
  • I can add clear, individual stitches in colour.
  • I can select areas to create with applique.

Lesson 4 and 5
L.O To create story scenes in fabric, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry.
Success Criteria:

  • I can be accurate (tracing / cutting / stitching).
  • I can explain my colour choices (felt and thread)
  • I can thread my needle
  • I can secure my thread
  • I can stitch
