An independent project I created for my year 8 groups, based on the topic they should have been learning in school but turned the lessons into a project to make it easier for them to work independently on a project.

Project is centered around how we see rainbows, and covers the following topics:

  • What is light?
  • Luminous vs non-luminous objects
  • The electromagnetic spectrum
  • What is a rainbow? When do they form?
  • The eye
  • Light ray diagrams
  • Reflection
  • Refraction
  • Why do we only see rainbows as a semi-circle?
  • Research into how, and whether or not, a rainbow could be seen as a full circle
  • Investigation into the visible light spectrum

At the end of the powerpoint, there is opportunity for pupils to plan an investigation, using prisms if in school or other objects they can find (eg. cds etc) that would create a rainbow spectrum. Slides include information on planning, recording and analysing. Designed to be set over a period of a few weeks, but could be split into a few lessons if desired.
