A 2-week unit based around a Daily Mail article on Cheryl Cole's 'firing' from X-Factor USA. Students work in differentiated groups to analyse the use of language in the article for effect, the bias, the use of pictures, and the way that fact and opinion are married to create the illusion of an actual news story! Also features a chance for students to write an essay on the article, with opportunities for group work/jigsawing/independent learning. For annotating the article, I photocopied each page onto its own A3 sheet so the students have plenty of room around the article to annotate in detail and colourfully!
