What’s it for?
This resource has been designed to encourage learners to investigate the various lines of symmetry within x8 2D shapes.

This investigation can be done by cutting/folding then recording these findings - drawing the lines of symmetry (using a ruler) onto the shapes on the sheet. Black and white and colour versions of both sheets are included.

Who’s it for?
Suitable for Years 1 and 2, older students needing support, and EYFS children. For younger learners, it may be best to enlarge the shapes/sheets first.

How to use this resource?
Encourage learners to follow these steps -

• Recording using a pencil and ruler (page 3/4)
• Investigating through cutting out the shapes (along the dotted outlines) then folding them (page 1/2)

Top tips…

• Learners should always begin by locating the centre of the shape. This is crucial for accuracy: the line of symmetry must pass directly through this centre point, whether they are folding or drawing it.

• Using safety mirrors is recommended both when investigation and recording findings to boost accuracy and clarity.

• For pupils who find cutting difficult, you may wish to pre-cut the shapes.

• Answers are included on a separate page in the same format which learners could use for quick, easy reference.
