This is a PPT that I used in a whole school literacy inset on "How to listen like a linguist". The starter the staff had to listen to a video of a popular song in French that everyone knew and fill in the gaps of missing words. Then take staff through two slides explaining how we develop listening language learning strategies. We show how the starter activity can be used for multiple purposes. We then show lyrics whereby pupils use thinking skills and knowledge of phonics to work out the tune. We show how this can be adapted for pupils to create their own lyrics. We give several YouTube links in both French and Spanish. There is an example of how transcripts can be cut out and pupils listen to reorder the text. An example from www.Lyricstraining.com is shown. An example of teaching new vocabulary through video is modelled with the topic of pets. Multiple choice reading and listening exercise is demonstrated. A gap fill grammar exercise with a song is shown. YouTube links for teaching key verbs and tenses are shown. Transcripts of exam listening questions are manipulated too. Links to external web sources are provided. The plenary is a Q&A for staff.
Highly enjoyable! This would be followed up by depts sharing their ideas and also feeding back as to how they have adapted the strategies shown in the inset.
