This is the first in a series of lessons looking at Medieval Britain and castles within Medieval Britain. This resource touches upon Williams need to build castles and encourages talk around his consolidation of power, introduces Motte and Bailey castles and encourages discussion regarding its strengths and weaknesses and then incorporates a fun and interesting ‘recipe’ activity taken from Emily Thomas’ book 100 Ideas for Secondary Teachers: Outstanding History Lessons. This activity also has a competition element to it which works on the recent research on the vocabulary gap, made relevant in 2018 from Alex Quigley’s book Closing the Vocabulary Gap.
