This unit has a focus on life around the port of Cai Be - Vietnam. This settlement depends on the water within the Mekong system. The water level varies during the year - being at its height when the Mekong has greater flow levels. The residents around the water's edge and those living in boats on the water adapt to the water conditions. Sample studies of a small scale family business are included because they represent the dozens of enterprises within the settlement. But Cai Be is also a tourist attraction. It is a destination for tourist companies bringing visitors from Ho Chi Minh City. Others reach the destination by taking side excursions off Mekong River Cruises. Take your students on a boat ride through the port. Find out how one small company uses the resources from the Mekong floodplain. Venture into the side channel and see the larger processing factories. The attachments provide an opportunity to distribute hard copies. This is part 1 of a series of studies on the Mekong River - a major river of South East Asia
