The activities in this resource are perfect for the first days of school to use as ice breakers, early finishers, to get to know your class and a whole lot more.

They are also a great way to introduce Interactive Notebooks – Interactive Notebook pages are included at the end of this resource to use as examples for the beginning of a year long Language Arts Interactive Notebook.

Look at my other resources throughout the year to add to your students’ Interactive Notebooks – as they are engaging, provide differentiated instruction opportunities and help students process and retain information.

Pages 4-12 are 4th Grade I Can Common Core State Standards or the New California Standards. Whatever one calls the CCSS today – these “I Cans” are at the 4th Grade level as backward mapped from what students are expected to know for college, vocational education and life as an adult.

Instructions for “I Cans”: Keep “I Cans” in folders or have students attach them into their Interactive Notebooks. As standards are mastered, have students check off what they think they know. Periodically collect them from students and add your own initials. These “I Cans” are a concrete way for students, parents and teachers know exactly what is expected and what a student has mastered. They are great for conferences, student study teams, IEPs and 504s as well.
