#### NRICH - Mystery Matrix

Multiplication, square numbers
Key Stage: 2 ★★

Can you explain how this matrix or table has been constructed? Can you fill in the table below in the same way using the information given?

This problem requires learners to apply knowledge of multiplication facts, and stresses the importance of knowing the squares of numbers, particularly the squares of primes. It will increase their familarity with representing multiplication facts as a grid or matrix.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

The file attached is a HTML file, which, when opened, automatically redirects you to the problem on the NRICH website.

#### Hear French words spoken with online web page

Click on the words to hear them in French or English. Children could test each other by clicking on the word (without seeing the screen) and seeing if the other get it right. Other languages are available, would be good to have phases like this, or whole reading books in french or other languages.

#### Simple Method of Multiplication

Each number is drawn as a straight lines, so 2 is two lines. To multiply 2 x 6, you draw 2 parallel lines for 2 and 6 lines for 6 at right angles. The result is the times the numbers cross. you just count these up. no prior need to understand division at all, just the ability to draw straight lines and count the intersections. It can be made simpler for 10, 11,12 by just drawing 10 , 11 or 12 straight lines. These are not my video's but on youtube. But the ease of use of this method and it simplicity should help any student to do multiplication and see where the result comes from.

Flip- chart moves through stages of multiplication as repeated addition and then an array. Can be made more practical (fun) by having a collection of small pairs of socks and lots of real life examples of an array. Also children love the chocolate challenge!
#### Sequence Ratio Worksheet - Differentiated

This is a nice activity to introduce the idea of ratio, by using sequences. Suitable for KS2.

I found it useful to use pieces of card (e.g. 1 yellow for every 2 blue) to visually demonstrate beforehand (using volunteers - each holding the correct ratio) and show how to record this into a table on the whiteboard as you go, before using this resource as the main activity.

I also allowed children to use counters at their table to aid them whilst completing the worksheet, as this was very beneficial to some learners.
