Writer Abi Morgan and director Sarah Gavron spent six years trying to get the film Suffragette made. It tells the story of the early days of feminism, as women in Britain fought with bombs, banners and bodies to win their right to vote. Carey Mulligan’s starring role as Maud, a working class mother struggling to make her voice heard, finally brought the movement to life on the big screen. A century on from those pre-First World War days of the suffragettes, much has changed for women in the UK. And yet, as they are often reminded, there is still a long way to go.

Our collection of articles looks at the main themes of Suffragette - feminism, democracy, activism, mothers and class. All articles are complete with activities, debate questions and further reading links.
