Monday 18 January marks Martin Luther King Day. Americans are encouraged to use the day to reflect on King’s work and legacy and to participate in community service in his honour. Meanwhile, tensions and violence in American cities such as Ferguson and Baltimore have served as a reminder that racial divisions remain pronounced in the USA. A new feature on The Day called Connections, explores some of the main themes of Selma, Ava DuVernay’s film which offers a vibrant and complex portrait of the historic episode in America’s civil rights movement inspired by Martin Luther King.

On 7 March 1965, Martin Luther King led around 2,000 people out of the city of Selma, Alabama. They were embarking on a 54-mile march towards the state’s capital, Montgomery, to protest against racial discrimination in the south. The protest was peaceful — but it was met with such brutal violence that it would become known as ‘Bloody Sunday’. A second march was also unsuccessful — but by the third time the marchers left Selma, President Johnson had introduced the Voting Rights Act to congress.
