This is a series of lessons I would do with groups who need more chances to discuss modern real-life ideas, whilst also introducing them to a range of texts and approaches to them.

The lessons start looking at the idea of perceptions and assumptions we make, in all aspects of our lives, and then asks them to look at how attitudes may have changed (eg. tattoos). This then leads to the idea of signs and symbols (logos) that students are surrounded by daily and how sometimes people look to the symbol before the person - “it’s not what on my feet…” This culminates in the exploration of disabilities and how being ‘disabled’ is perceived.

This has always worked great for reluctant learners and mainstream students alike - gives them a chance to voice their opinions while reading and analysing a range of text types.
