Jackson Pollock in quotes - the American artist on his Drip-painting & his life in Abstract Expressionism in the United States - free resource for students, pupils, art-lovers and teachers in American art history

.
Jackson Pollock explained in his artist quotes his characteristic way of making ‘Drip’ paintings. He described how he handled the oil-paint on the canvas - flat on the floor, and unstretched. This was his favorite technique to create his paintings (see picture at the right). So, his contemporary artists in the U.S. called Pollock ‘Jack The Dripper’.

In his quotes he described in quotes his dynamic painting style a typical American, by contrasting it with the more subtel and softer ‘French’ abstract art approach. He emphasized the impact of Freud and Jung’s theory on his art and the Indian culture in America, from the West. He also accepted empathicly the influence of European artists on American artists.

Some selected quotes of American artist Jackson Pollock - as a short introduction of his extended quotes in the PDF:

  • ’I believe easel painting to be a dying form, and the tendency of modern feeling is toward the wall picture or mural…’ - Pollock’s quote, 1944: from his application for a grant - given by the Guggenheim Foundation

  • ’When I am in my painting, I am not aware of what I’m doing. It is only after a short of ‘get acquainted’ period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc. ’ -quote of Pollock, in: ‘Possibilities’, Vol. 1, no 1, winter 1947-48, p. 79

  • ’I accept the fact that the important painting of the last hundred years was done in France. American painters have generally missed the point of modern painting from beginning to end… .Thus the fact that good European moderns (artists - escaping Hitler) are now here is very important, for they bring with them an understanding of the problems of modern painting. I am particularly impressed with their concept of… …the unconscious.’ - Pollock’s quote in: ‘Art and Architecture’ Vol. 61 no. 2, February 1944
