As Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a film adaptation of the 2009 parody novel of the same name premieres, our collection of articles looks at the main themes of Jane Austen’s most famous novel - Women, Marriage, Pride, Prejudice and Wealth. All articles are complete with activities, debate questions and further reading links.

When Elizabeth Bennet overhears Fitzwilliam Darcy refer to her as ‘tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me’, the die is cast – and they spend the rest of the novel navigating more misunderstandings and complicated emotions. Finally, of course, they reach an understanding and live happily ever after. But Pride and Prejudice is more than a love story: it is a lighthearted commentary on wealth, class, family, duty, communication and women’s place in society. And Austen conveys all this with warm characters, vivid storytelling and a sharp satirical wit.

Keywords: English, Literature, Britain, Jane Austen, class, love, equality, pride, prejudice, language, film, feminism, social history, relationships
