NEWLY-REVISED AND UPDATED RESOURCE COMING SOON!
PERFECT FOR YOUNG LEARNERS OF LATIN: LATIN STARTER VOCABULARY (1) READ, LABEL AND LEARN, with Whole-group Practice Activity features 21 high-frequency words in LATIN, and includes a range of genders/declensions with nouns in both the singular and plural. The posters introduce children to the 'look' of LATIN from the very beginning of their learning, providing them with multi-skill learning opportunities: reading, spelling and, listening, as well as engaging with basic writing to develop their confidence in LATIN.
It doesn't matter if some of the words don't feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the learning display provides children with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in LATIN, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words and cognates, and to begin to link the roots of ENGLISH words from LATIN ones. It also helps them to begin to work out meanings of new or 'unknown' words from visual clues.
Creating a LATIN 'look' and 'feel' to your classroom and school corridors also promotes LATIN as a 'real' language, featuring in the everyday life of the school. Children enjoy honing their artistic and design skills by selecting their favourite WOW word to colour, label and decorate - this is also a great opportunity to work with bilingual dictionaries. Children also have the additional challenge of writing the correct LATIN words in their best handwriting, and love to see their work celebrated on classroom and school walls.
Introduce and practice the words with the practice activity, encouraging children to repeat the words several times: embedding vocabulary in the longer-term memory is something that does require a lot of frequent and regular practice, so practice as often as you can across both a short and longer-term series of lesson, and the entire school year.
