I have been collecting small items from my own children's toys (barbie, lego and playmobile are particularly useful) for many years. The children play these games by finding an object that rhymes with the word on the board. However I used to use picture cards with equal success. As many of the children I teach are ELL, I find it best to make sure that the children know what the objects are - as this helps to make the game success orientated.
