River Valley Civilizations: Gifts of the land : How does Geography influence the people? Brochure!!!
Focus Question: How Did the Geographical Features of the Four River Valley’s Shape the Lives of the People who Lived There?
Background: Four of the world's ancient civilizations emerged along large rivers in dry climates, around 6000-4000 BCE, and it was not by chance. The rivers played a key role in the emergence of Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley civilization, and Ancient China. Broadly speaking, the rivers not only made the civilizations possible by making food plentiful but also made them necessary by giving the people in those four areas new challenges that only "civilization" could solve.
In addition other geographical features have helped or hindered these ancient civilizations. Natural boundaries such as mountains, rivers, deserts, seas, oceans can isolate a society protecting the civilization from invaders, yet possibly hindering the growth of that civilization. Also, weather patterns and climate also have a profound impact on these ancient civilizations shaping the lives of the civilians within it. With this project you will explore the geography of the four ancient River Valley civilizations and create a brochure based on the criteria listed below.
TASK: Take the role of a scribe/priest who has traveled through time to explore the four ancient river valleys in hopes to learn how geography has affected and shaped the development of these ancient civilizations. You will do so by creating a brochure
