Factors and Multiples - Common Factors
Key Stage: 3 ★★

Which step lengths will hit all the points around the circle? What relationship do you need to achieve this?

This problem encourages students to see the maths underpinning a situation. In this case it is the importance of factors and multiples in what is at first glance a geometrical setting. To avoid spoiling the surprise, it may be worth doing this activity at the start of work on the topic, without telling the students what the topic is.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

A very good way of teaching factors and multiples in a geometrical way. Pupils are required to find the relationship between the number of dots and the number of steps needed to hit all points. I would make this a whole lesson investigation and allow pupils to work in groups and have a play on the software to explore.
