Take your students to the remote Galapagos Islands to encounter several strange animals. Find a penguin well north of its usual cold habitat. Discover two types of giant tortoise with different shells. Look at a cormorant - the only one that cannot fly. See the iguanas that look like reptiles from long ago. Find out why the crabs have a unique name. Then observe the red and blue footed boobies that are somewhat awkward on land but are very efficient divers for food over the ocean. Some are endangered and most need protection through conservation programs. The photographs reveal the strange group. The description detail differences and places on the endangered list. In the background is the role of Charles Darwin and his visit on the island. This will be a focus on the final unit on the volcanic islands of Galapagos. Most students are intrigued by Galapagos. Hopefully yours will join that number.
