Some selected artist-quotes on French Surrealism - as a short introduction of their extended quotes in the PDF:

  • ’Surrealism is the ‘invisible ray’ which will one day enable us to win out over our opponents… .This summer the roses are blue; the wood is of glass. The earth, draped in its verdant cloak, makes as little impression upon me as a ghost. It is living and ceasing to live which are imaginary solutions. Existence is elsewhere.’ - Breton’s quote: last sentence of his ‘First Surrealist Manifesto’, Paris, France, 1924

  • ’- One might think that through ecstasy we would have access to a world as far from reality as that of the dream. – The repugnant can become desirable, affection cruelty, the ugly beautiful, faults qualities, qualities black miseries.’ - artist quote of Salvador Dali, in: ‘Mon amie et la plage’ (My girlfriend and the beach), Dali 1927

  • ’What is a forest? A marvelous insect. A drawing-board, what do forests do? They never go to bed early. They are waiting for the tailor. What is the high season of the forests? It is the future… .Man and the nightingales were in the most favourable situation for imagining: for them the forest was a perfect dream-conductor… - artist quote of Max Ernst, in ‘The mysteries of the forest’ (1934)
